Chris Hoppe (Phloodpants) > And they have the weirdest flowers! This looks like I did something to it in Photoshop, but I did not.

Chris Hoppe (Phloodpants) > The gaping maw of the pitcher plant. There are little spiny red hairs on the insides of the cups to let bugs climb down, but not back up.
Chris Hoppe (Phloodpants) > This outcropping of rock shows the impact blast of the meteorite! It is part of a melted bowl of rock that underlies the entire crater. This section has been exposed by an eroding stream that flows down the side of the crater wall.
Chris Hoppe (Phloodpants) > The impact blast is estimated to have been equivalent to 250 Megatons of TNT. As it smashed into the earth at unimaginable speed, it melted the rock and created this bowl of precambrian rock.

This is like looking at the edge of a piece of broken crockery. The rest of this material is thousands of feet below the lakes.
Chris Hoppe (Phloodpants) > The meteorite was estimated to be at least 150 meters across and impacted at a rate of 11Km per second. At this speed, you would have never heard it, and if you blinked, you wouldn't have seen it either. It is estimated that the earthquake that occurred in what is now Ottawa would have registered stronger than any seismic activity in human history. It would have blown out windows in Montreal. Needless to say, this was a large event, but not for the northern hemisphere! Ontario was somewhere around the equator at the time and this was a shallow sea!
Chris Hoppe (Phloodpants) > The creek that eroded this valley.
